The recipients of the award

Six authors have been honoured as Hans Christian Andersen Literary Award recipients. Altogether, they represent a wide range of literary styles and forms. Karl Ove Knausgård

The Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgård will be the seventh and the first Nordic recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.

A.S. Byatt

Dame Antonia Susan Byatt is an English novelist and poet, known professionally as A.S. Byatt. She received the H.C. Andersen Literature Award in October 2018.

Haruki Murakami

Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer. He received the H.C. Andersen Literature Award in 2016.

2014

Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay less than two months before the end of the British Raj. He received the H.C. Andersen Literature Award in 2014.

2012

Isabel Allende

Isabel Allende is a Chilean-American novelist whose novels weave myth and realism. She received the H.C. Andersen Literature Award in 2012.

2010

J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is a British novelist and screenwriter. She received the H.C. Andersen Literature Award in 2010.

2007

Paulo Coelho

Paulo Coelho received an “Honorary Award” from the city of Odense in 2007, and became the first recipient of an award that, in 2010, would be named the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
